The Lifestyle Dictionary: Swinger Terms Every Newcomer Should Know
The first time you scroll a lifestyle site or stand at the bar of a lifestyle club, it can feel like everyone is speaking a language you never got the textbook for. Soft swap. Unicorn. Same room. Compersion. People drop these words casually, and nobody stops to explain them.
So we did. This is the plain-English dictionary we wish someone had handed us before our first night out. Bookmark it, send it to your partner, and read it together over a glass of wine. Half the fun of learning the language is finding out which words make you both lean in.
One thing before we start: these words describe options, not expectations. Knowing what "full swap" means doesn't mean anyone expects it from you. Most couples use this vocabulary to say what they don't want just as often as what they do.
The big picture
The lifestyle: the umbrella term for couples and singles who enjoy social, flirtatious or sexual experiences with other people, together and with full consent. If someone asks "are you in the lifestyle?" this is what they mean.
Swinger: the older word for the same thing. Plenty of people still use it, some prefer "lifestyle," and nobody minds either one.
ENM (ethical non-monogamy): a broad term for any relationship where partners openly agree that connection with other people is okay. Swinging, open relationships and polyamory all live under this umbrella.
Polyamory (poly): having romantic relationships with more than one person, with everyone's knowledge. Swinging is usually about shared fun as a couple; poly is usually about more than one ongoing relationship. Some people are both.
Open relationship: partners agree they can connect with other people, often separately. Swingers usually play together; open couples may or may not.
Vanilla: people outside the lifestyle, or experiences that are more traditional. Not an insult. Plenty of lifestyle couples have very vanilla jobs and very vanilla Tuesday nights.
Lifestyle-curious: interested, not sure yet, still figuring it out. This is where everyone starts, and it's a perfectly good place to stay for a while.
Who's who
Couple: two partners attending or playing together. Often written as MF (male and female), FF or MM on profiles.
Unicorn: a single woman who enjoys meeting couples. The nickname comes from how rare and sought-after a great one is. Unicorns are usually the most welcome guests at any party.
Bull: a single man who enjoys meeting couples, usually with the couple's specific invitation. A good bull is respectful, patient and lets the couple lead. We wrote a full guide for unicorns and bulls if this is you.
Single male: the general term for single men at lifestyle events. Most parties cap how many single men attend so every room stays balanced and comfortable.
Bi-curious or heteroflexible: mostly straight, open to some same-sex attraction or play. You'll see this a lot on women's profiles.
Newbies: first-timers. Say it proudly. Experienced couples tend to go out of their way to make newbies feel welcome.
Hosts: the people running the party. At a Fanz 4 Freaks night, hosts are on the floor all night, making introductions and keeping an eye on the room.
How far it goes
These are the terms couples use most when setting their boundaries. Knowing them makes ground-rule conversations faster and clearer.
Social only: flirting, dancing and conversation, nothing physical beyond maybe a hug. A great way to spend a first night.
Soft swap: some physical play with another couple, with a clear line somewhere before full intimacy. Where exactly that line sits is different for every couple, which is why you should always ask instead of assume.
Full swap: partners are open to full intimacy with someone other than each other.
Same room: any play happens with both partners in the same room. Many couples start here and stay here.
Separate room: partners are comfortable playing with others while apart. A big step that usually comes much later, if at all.
Girl-girl only: the women in a couple are open to play with each other or a single woman, and the men aren't involved.
Watching: some people love being in the room and watching others, and some love being watched. Both are completely normal and completely optional.
Ground rules: the agreements you and your partner make before you go out. Every couple has them, and good couples revisit them often.
Veto: either partner's right to say "not tonight" or "not them" at any moment, no explanation needed. Healthy couples honor a veto without arguing.
At the party
Play party: an event where physical play is welcome in designated areas. Our play parties are held at established lifestyle clubs with private rooms, security and staff.
Social night: an event built around meeting people, with no play on site. Our Mutuals nights are social nights, held at bars and lounges.
On-premise club: a lifestyle club with playrooms on site.
Off-premise club: a club or event where people meet and socialize, and anything further happens somewhere else, if at all.
Meet and greet: a low-key social mixer, often the easiest first event to try.
Takeover: when a promoter or group hosts their own night at an existing lifestyle club, bringing their own crowd and energy.
Playroom: the area set aside for play at an on-premise event. At most clubs, an open door means you're welcome to watch quietly from the doorway, and a closed door means private.
BYOB: bring your own bottle. Common at lifestyle clubs, which often aren't licensed to sell alcohol. Check the event page so you know what to bring.
House rules: the rules every guest agrees to at the door. Ours are short and worth reading before your first night: house rules and FAQ.
Vetting: how a host decides who gets in. Category caps, ID checks and guest lists all keep the crowd what it should be.
Consent and communication
Consent: a clear, enthusiastic yes, every time, from everyone involved. It can be withdrawn at any moment. In the lifestyle, consent isn't a formality. It's the whole foundation.
"No" is a complete answer: you'll hear this at every good party. Nobody owes anyone an explanation, and a polite no is never rude.
Check-in: a quick moment with your partner during the night to make sure you're both still having fun. A glance, a squeeze of the hand or a two-minute trip to the bar together all count.
Debrief: the conversation on the ride home or the next morning about what you loved, what surprised you and what you'd do differently. Couples who debrief well tend to stay in the lifestyle happily for years.
Aftercare: the attention and affection partners give each other after an intense night. Sometimes it's a long talk, sometimes it's pancakes and a movie.
Compersion: feeling genuine happiness when your partner enjoys themselves with someone else. Often described as the opposite of jealousy. Some people feel it right away, some grow into it, and some never do. All of that is okay.
NRE (new relationship energy): the giddy rush of a new connection. Fun, and worth keeping in perspective so it doesn't crowd out your primary relationship.
Words you'll see on profiles
Discreet: they keep their lifestyle private, and they'll expect the same from you. Never share names, photos or details about anyone you meet.
Drama-free: they want easy, respectful connections. Translation: be clear, be kind and be on time.
Chemistry first: they want to meet socially before anything else happens. Honestly, most of the best couples work this way.
Experienced: they've been around a while. Usually a good sign for newbies, since experienced couples tend to be patient and generous with advice.
The only word that really matters
If you remember nothing else from this page, remember this: the lifestyle runs on respect. Learn the words so you can say what you want clearly, listen closely when other people tell you what they want, and treat every "no" as gracefully as every "yes."
